Forward Living
Working for people with learning disabilities in Devon

25 years Aniversary

ABOUT FORWARD LIVING

Forward Living is a registered charity.
We provide accommodation and support for people with learning disabilities in Devon and Torbay. We provide a wide range of accommodation and support services, from Supported Living where we assist someone in their own home for a number of hours per week, to care homes including a nursing home. We have a particular specialism in providing accommodation and support to people with learning disabilities who have very high support needs.
Two of our specialisms are Nursing services and supporting people in various stages of Dementia. These services are in great demand. We are therefore working with the Primary Care Trusts, Social Services and Housing to move both the Nursing Service and the Dementia service to new buildings with specialised equipment and facilities.
We will also meet the high demand by providing additional places.
We will not be able to achieve all we wish to achieve from grants and funding by the statutory authorities and so we are launching a new fund during the celebrations week and over the next 3 years we hope to raise £50,000 for special furniture and extra items.

During the anniversary week we want the public to know more about us and we will be holding three public events:  see concerts page

A celebrity launch on Monday, 16 May in Tiverton.

A concert by Seckou Keita, an internationally acclaimed West African musician, at The Great Hall, Dartington, on Wednesday, 18 May.

A concert by Ricky Ross, the voice and soul of Deacon Blue, at the Riviera International Centre Torquay on Saturday, 21 May.
Forward Living is a charity solely operating in Devon and Torbay. We are one of the biggest charities working exclusively in our region but usually we do not draw too much attention to ourselves.

We do not draw attention to the people with learning disabilities we provide services for - we support them in a way that gives them privacy and helps them to take part in the life of their communities.

Our services are in:
Teignbridge: Teignmouth, Dawlish, Newton Abbot, Bovey Tracey
Torbay: Torquay, Paignton, Brixham
South Hams: Totnes
Mid Devon: Tiverton, Cullompton, Halberton
We employ over 200 people locally.

Supported living services in Mid Devon
Forward Living supports people in their own homes throughout Mid Devon. We provide individual packages of support based on the person's own needs. This can vary from a few hours a week to 24 - hours a day support. People are supported in their tenancies with the District Council, housing associations or private landlords by Forward Living staff.

SUPPORTED LIVING
Supported Living is where someone is supported to live in their own home, usually a tenancy with a housing association, council or private landlord. A separation between the housing provision and the support provider gives the individual greater autonomy and control. Since 2003, the Supporting People initiative has been a major government initiative in funding and reviewing supported living schemes. The two terms are often confused.

Forward Living is committed to providing supported living services for people with learning disabilities. The charity believes that a wide range of accommodation options should be available to people whatever their support needs. We provide supported living services throughout Devon and Torbay and this will be an area of growth in the future.

FUNDRAISING
During the next three years Forward Living is developing two exciting and much needed services: a nursing home for people with learning disabilities in Torbay (care home with nursing) and a Dementia - specialist care home in Teignbridge.

All forms of available funding are being used to provide the buildings and basic equipment. However, we need to raise £50,000 to provide modern equipment that will enhance the lives of people who need nursing or Dementia care.

REDEVELOPING THE HOLLIES
Forward Living's objective is:
To transfer a Dementia service for people with learning disabilities in Teignbridge into a flagship "Dementia - friendly" building.

In order to do so we will surrender the current property in Wallfield Road, Bovey Tracey, and reinvest the proceeds into a new building.
The Future Service
Forward Living has many years of experience in providing specialist support services to adults with learning disabilities and high support needs. The Hollies has developed as a Dementia service in line with the support needs of the current service user group. This specialism is in much demand for service users within Forward Living and within the learning disability sector, as specialist services for this service user group are scarce.

The new service will continue to provide the appropriate levels of care and support, delivered by trained staff and within a much more appropriate building, which will be custom - built to the highest standards. This service will combine skilled staff support with environmental features designed to maintain service users skills as long as possible, in addition to providing safety and security throughout the various stages of Dementia.

Dementia care generally, and Dementia care for people with learning disabilities in particular, is a growing priority for Government. It is recognised that a well - designed building is vital to the provision of good quality support which maximises independence and reduces distress.

Forward Housing, the sister charity of Forward Living, owns The Hollies and would wish to vacate the existing property in favour of a more appropriate building.
The Benefits
New Provision

Provision of a flagship specialist Dementia service within Teignbridge in terms of building design and service delivery.

Support and accommodation for eight adults with learning disabilities and Dementia in the locality.

Existing Property

Potential availability of a property in a prime location suitable for redevelopment for alternative use by a Housing Association.

Potential new housing within Teignbridge.
REDEVELOPING LINDISFARNE
Forward Living's objective is:
To transfer a nursing service for people with learning disabilities in Torbay into a flagship Nursing Service.
In order to do so we will surrender the current property in Great Headland Road, Paignton, and reinvest the proceeds into a new building.

The Future Service
Forward Living has many years of experience in providing a specialist nursing service for adults with learning disabilities who also have nursing needs. Unfortunately we only have seven places at Lindisfarne which is not enough to meet the current and future demands in the locality. Specialised nursing services for those people with learning disabilities who need them are scarce and Forward Living intends to provide 16 places in two adjoining units for eight people.

The new service will move to a much more appropriate building which will be custom - built to the highest standards. This service will combine a skilled staff team, including qualified nurses, and environmental features designed to allow service users as much independence as possible.

Forward Housing, the sister charity of Forward Living, owns the Lindisfarne property and would wish to vacate it in favour of a more appropriate building.
The Benefits
New Provision

Provision of a flagship specialist Nursing service within Torbay in terms of building design and service delivery.

Support and accommodation for sixteen adults with learning disabilities who also have Nursing needs in the locality.

Existing Property
Potential availability of a property in a prime location suitable for redevelopment for alternative use by a Housing Association.

Potential new housing within Torbay.
